Law 1: Cause & Effect, The Big Kahuna of Karma
Optimize inputs to generate optimized outputs
Now that we've set the stage with some Karmic Thoughts, let's zoom in on each law, one by one.
And shhh…don't tell the others, but this is The law. The big Kahuna of Karma.
Because if things aren't working the way you want, this is where you start getting your lotus flowers in a row—objectives and expectations clear, inputs aligned, efforts connected, and ownership shared.
The other laws help you navigate bumps and set course corrections, but most chaos traces back to this one:
Cause → Effect
At its core, it's simple: inputs drive outputs.
Organizations (and individuals) need balanced, connected inputs to get the outcomes they want. If results don't show, chances are the front end is out of alignment.
Living Proof
Take a look of cause and effect in
action on a global stage…enter Taylor & Travis, Exhibit A:
On his New Heights podcast,
Travis Kelce admitted he struck out trying to meet Taylor Swift at her Kansas
City show. That swing-and-miss made headlines, which put him on her radar. She
decided he was worth meeting, and the rest is history.
Cause → effect.
At work: effort compounds. Even a
swing and a miss can spark momentum.
In life: small actions—kind words, risks, stumbles—can open doors that lead to unexpectedly pleasant places.
Your Cause & Effect Check-In
How clear is your organization's vision for where it wants to be in the next year?
A) We've got the roadmap and know
how to read it.
B) The path comes in and out of view.
C) Map? What map?
If you confidently answered A,
you're golden—but keep measuring to ensure it stays that way.
If you're at B or C, stop guessing and start knowing.
One simple start: survey your people.
Ask them this one question (feel free to adjust based on your own circumstances). Give them context for why you're asking it. Promise that details will follow, and then deliver. Invite them into the discussion. Involve them in co-creating solutions.
This does three things:
- It clarifies the state of affairs for everyone.
- It sets a baseline you can track over time.
- It gets employees involved—and on a path to engagement.
From Data to Action:
Once you have a baseline, don't retreat into a vacuum.
Start moving along a path toward enlightenment:
- Clarify the why. Understand why people feel the way they do.
- Name the issues. Agree that they have been characterized accurately and then rank them by importance.
- Collaborate for change. Invite stakeholders (internal and external) to brainstorm solutions. (Pro tip: making this optional ensures you have the most engaged participants, and also gives you a chance to see where engagement is lacking. Remember, if you choose not to be part of the solution, you are part of the problem.)
- Prioritize. Match effort to impact. Start with the changes that matter most and are easiest to implement. Don't get stuck chasing perfect data—progress beats paralysis.
- Implement, discuss, adjust. Set and track key metrics. Talk about what is and isn't working and why. Keep the cycle alive and you'll also drive engagement, ownership, and improved results.
